AC Repair From a Family-Run Austin Company Since 2017

An AC rarely quits on a mild day. It quits in July, when the air handler in your attic is already working its hardest. Gold Eagle Services has repaired air conditioners around Austin since 2017, and most of those calls trace back to a short list of parts that Texas heat wears out. Our technicians find which one failed and tell you what the fix takes before they start.

Signs Your AC Needs Repair

An AC usually complains before it quits. Book a repair visit if you notice:

  • Warm or barely cool air from the vents
  • The system turning on and off every few minutes (short cycling)
  • Ice on the copper refrigerant lines or the indoor coil
  • Water in the drain pan under the air handler, or pooling around the indoor unit
  • The breaker tripping when the AC starts
  • Buzzing, grinding, rattling or squealing noises
  • Rooms that won’t cool down, or an electric bill that suddenly jumps

Catching it early usually means replacing one small part instead of the fan motor or compressor it was straining.

Common AC Repairs We Make

We repair all major air conditioner and heat pump brands. These are the repairs we make most often in Austin homes, where the outdoor unit sits in full sun and the air handler usually sits in the attic:

  • Capacitors and contactors. These small electrical parts help the outdoor unit start. They wear out quickly in Texas heat and are one of the most common reasons an AC stops cooling.
  • Refrigerant leaks. An AC doesn’t use up refrigerant, so low refrigerant means a leak. We find and repair the leak instead of just topping the system off.
  • Frozen evaporator coils. Low airflow, a dirty coil or low refrigerant usually cause the ice. We find out why it froze so it doesn’t ice up again next week.
  • Clogged condensate drains and float switches. A blocked drain either trips the float switch and shuts the system off, or overflows and leaks water into your home.
  • Blower and condenser fan motors. A weak motor moves less air, so the whole system runs longer and harder to cool the house.
  • Compressor problems. We test the compressor itself before condemning it, then tell you whether a repair makes sense for a system that age.
  • Thermostat and wiring issues. Sometimes the AC is fine and a failed thermostat or a loose wire is the whole problem.

Want to check a few things yourself first? Read why an AC freezes up, why an AC leaks water, why an AC blows warm air and why an AC trips the breaker and what a buzzing or rattling noise means.

What Happens on an AC Repair Visit

  • You tell us the symptom. Warm air, ice, water or a tripped breaker each point to different parts, so the technician arrives prepared.
  • We diagnose the real cause. Your technician checks the electrical parts, refrigerant circuit, airflow, drainage and controls, not just the part that looks guilty.
  • You get clear options first. We explain what we found and what each option costs before any work begins. The standard service call is $79.
  • We make the repair. Many common parts are on the truck, so most repairs are finished the same visit.
  • We test the system. Before leaving, the technician confirms the system is cooling properly.

Should You Repair or Replace Your AC?

In Austin’s climate, most central air conditioners last about 10 to 15 years. Repair usually makes sense when the system is younger, the problem is a single component and it has been reliable. Replacement is often the better value when the system is older, needs repeated repairs, uses R-22 refrigerant or can’t keep up with your home anymore.

Your technician will tell you which side of that line your system is on. If replacement is on the table, you can see pricing for your exact system in about two minutes with Build Your System, and financing is available. Also read repair vs. replace: which saves more money?

What Affects the Cost of AC Repair?

The same symptom, warm air from the vents, can mean a small capacitor or a failed compressor, which is why we diagnose before we quote. The main things that affect cost are:

  • Which part failed and whether it is on the truck
  • The system’s age, brand and refrigerant type
  • Whether there is a refrigerant leak to find and repair
  • How easy the equipment is to reach (attic, closet or rooftop)

Our standard service call is $79, and you’ll know the repair cost before any work starts.
