Buda Then and Now

The town began as Du Pre, platted in 1881 on the International-Great Northern line, and took the name Buda in 1887. It incorporated in 1948 and stayed small for decades, then more than doubled from 7,295 people in 2010 to 15,108 in 2020. Onion Creek winds through the northwest side of town. Gold Eagle Services handles heating, cooling and indoor air all over Buda, from homes near the shops at Buda Mill & Grain to the newer neighborhoods off I-35 by Cabela’s, and one request comes up again and again: a ductless air conditioner for a room the main system can’t reach.

From Railroad Town to New Subdivisions

When it was builtWhat you usually findThe HVAC issue to watch
1881 to 1930sDowntown commercial buildings and nearby older homes, some on pier-and-beamDucts under floors or in tiny attics; additions never fully tied in
Mid-century to 1990sHouses on bigger lots around the old townAging furnaces, patched ductwork, garages and shops without cooling
2000s to todaySlab subdivisions along I-35 and FM 967Builder sizing, attic duct leaks, heat pumps on backup strips in a freeze, HOA rules for outdoor units

Older homes near Main Street have the most character and the fewest good places to run ducts. The newest homes out by the interstate have plenty of attic room, but their systems were often picked in a hurry during construction. The fixes below are sorted with both in mind.

Ductless Air Conditioners and Other Fixes for Buda Homes

A ductless air conditioner suits Buda’s older homes because it needs no ductwork at all, and it works just as well for the garage, addition or workshop of a newer one. As a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor, Gold Eagle Services installs and repairs ductless mini-splits and ductless air conditioners for one room or several. A multi-zone system can serve three or four rooms from a single outdoor unit, a good fit for an old house that never had central air.

For central systems, our AC repair team checks airflow and refrigerant charge before blaming the equipment. Our heating services cover heat pumps and furnaces, and any heat pump home should get a pre-winter tune-up before the first norther. Thinking about replacement? Build your system online to compare options.

Buda Home Comfort Calendar

  • March: rinse spring dust and pollen off the outdoor coil and change the filter.
  • April: when the Lions Club wiener dog races come around, book your cooling tune-up.
  • July: check the drain line and the pan under the attic air handler.
  • August: hose off the outdoor unit after dry, dusty weeks.
  • October: test heat pump backup heat before the first norther.
  • December to February: use better filtration through cedar season and check the daily air quality index.
  • Any season: if dust, humidity or odors bother you, ask about our indoor air quality services.

Our Home Maintenance Plan takes the spring and fall visits off your list.

Did You Know? Buda Trivia

Buda’s wiener dog races, run each spring by the Lions Club, have drawn national attention to this small railroad town.

Bonus: local tradition says the name Buda comes from the Spanish word viuda, or widow, after the widows said to have cooked at the Carrington Hotel by the tracks. And the six-block downtown, with 28 historic buildings, joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
