Mini-Split Installation and HVAC Service in Hyde Park, Austin

Hyde Park was Austin’s first planned suburb, opened in 1891 and served by an electric streetcar that Monroe Martin Shipe ran out from downtown to sell lots. Its biggest building boom came between 1924 and 1935, so the blocks between Guadalupe, Duval, 38th and 45th Streets hold Victorians, Craftsman bungalows and Tudor cottages built long before central air. That is why so many owners here ask us about mini-splits. Here are the questions we hear most, from mini-split repair to heating an old house on piers.

Usually, yes. A ductless mini-split needs only a small hole through an exterior wall for the refrigerant lines and drain, and the indoor head mounts on the wall or ceiling. There is no need to run new ducts through original plaster or tear up a shallow attic. Common mini-split repair calls include a head that drips water, a unit that blinks an error code, or one that cools but no longer heats. Dirty filters and clogged condensate lines cause many of these, but refrigerant leaks and failed sensors happen too. In most Hyde Park homes, the central system was added decades after construction. Ducts were squeezed into shallow attics or run under pier-and-beam floors, and the rooms at the far end of those runs, like old sleeping porches and back additions, get the least air. Leaks along the way make it worse. Sealing duct connections and checking insulation often helps before any equipment change. Look closely at 39th Street between Avenue F and Duval: its curve follows part of the old horse racing track from the years the State Fair of Texas was held here, 1875 to 1884. And Avenue B Grocery, built in 1909, is the oldest continuously operating grocery store in Austin.
