How a Park Became a Neighborhood
Most Austinites know Zilker by its park. In the early 1900s Andrew Jackson Zilker owned the land around Barton Springs and used the spring water for his ice business. He deeded the springs to the city in 1918 and sold the rest of the parkland in stages, giving the proceeds to a trust for Austin’s public schools. The first houses went up in the late 1920s, and the streets between Lady Bird Lake, Barton Springs Road, South Lamar and Barton Skyway have been filling in ever since, around the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, Matt’s El Rancho and a park that hosts the Austin City Limits Music Festival and the Trail of Lights. Gold Eagle Services is a family-run Austin HVAC company, and Zilker is close to home for us.
