Questions We Hear Around McNeil

McNeil began as a railroad junction in northern Travis County, where the International and Great Northern crossed the Austin and Northwestern, and it was named for section foreman George McNeil. Today the name covers the neighborhoods between north Austin and Round Rock, around McNeil Road, Parmer Lane and McNeil High School. Here are the questions we hear most from homes in this corner of town, with short answers.

My McNeil home is on its third heat pump. Why do the same rooms stay warm?

Because the equipment got replaced and the ducts didn’t. Many McNeil homes went up as north Austin grew toward Round Rock, on slabs with the air handler and ductwork in the attic. After decades in attic heat, flex duct sags, its insulation thins and connections pull apart, so the rooms at the end of the longest runs get less air no matter how new the unit is. Returns too small for the house make it worse. Before you buy a fourth system, have the ducts tested and sealed. If the AC itself quits, our AC repair team will tell you whether the fault is in the equipment or in the air path.

Is a 12- or 15-year-old system worth repairing?

It depends on what broke. A failed capacitor or contactor is a small repair on any system. A dead compressor or a leaking coil on an older unit is a different conversation. We lay out both paths and you decide. If you’re leaning toward replacement, you can build a new system online and see equipment options before anyone comes out.

What should I do before the first freeze?

Book a heating check in the fall. When temperatures drop hard, heat pumps lean on electric backup strips, and a weak defrost control or a failed strip tends to show up on the coldest night of the year. Our heating repair and heat pump service covers heat pumps and gas furnaces, and a heating tune-up catches most of those problems early. If the house has gas, a dual fuel system hands the job to the furnace when the heat pump would struggle.

Can I cool a converted garage without touching the main system?

Yes. A ductless mini-split is made for it: a wall-mounted indoor unit tied to a small outdoor unit, running on its own, so the rest of the house never feels the new load. As a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor, we install and repair ductless mini-splits for converted garages, home offices and bonus rooms. If your neighborhood has an HOA, check its rules on outdoor equipment before picking a spot.

Why is my home so dusty when I change the filter regularly?

Leaky return ducts in the attic pull in attic dust and insulation fibers, and traffic on US 183 and Parmer Lane adds its own grime. A filter only catches what passes through it, so sealing the return side and choosing the right filter usually does more than changing filters more often. Our indoor air quality services include duct sealing, cleaning and better filtration, and our air quality index page shows current Austin conditions.

How do I avoid a breakdown in July?

Two short visits a year. Our Home Maintenance Plan covers a spring cooling check and a fall heating check, with coil cleaning, electrical tests and refrigerant checks, so a weak part gets caught in spring instead of failing in a July heat wave.

Did You Know? McNeil Trivia

McNeil High School opened in 1992 as part of Round Rock ISD, even though its address on McNeil Road is in Austin. The campus actually sits on the Travis and Williamson county line.

Another one: in the late 1880s McNeil became home to the Austin White Lime Company, and in its early days workers cut about eight cords of cedar a day to keep the lime kilns burning, until coal took over in the early 1900s.
