The Round Rock, the table-shaped limestone landmark in Brushy Creek, in Round Rock, Texas

Round Rock, Built in Layers

Round Rock is named for the round, anvil-shaped rock in Brushy Creek where wagons and, later, cattle on the Chisholm Trail crossed. The town grew up on the creek banks in 1851, and today it is a city of nearly 120,000 people and the international headquarters of Dell. It also straddles the Balcones Escarpment: east of I-35 the land is flat blackland prairie with heavy clay soil locals once called black waxy, and to the west it climbs into rocky Hill Country. That split, plus more than a century of building, means two Round Rock houses a few miles apart can need very different things from their heating and cooling.

What Year Was Your Round Rock House Built?

When it was builtWhat you usually findThe HVAC issue to watch
Old Town, 1800s and early 1900sStone and frame buildings near the historic downtown, many remodeledCooling added long after construction, cramped duct routes, rooms that were never tied in
1980s to 2000s subdivisionsSlab homes with the air handler and ducts in the attic, many on a second systemSagging, leaky original ductwork and a warm upstairs in two-story plans
Newer builds on former farmland, mostly east of I-35Tight modern houses on clay soilsOversized builder systems that short-cycle, shutting off before they pull the moisture out, plus outdoor pads that shift as the clay moves
West side, toward the Hill CountryHomes on rocky, shallow soil among cedar and oakHeavy winter cedar pollen and hot west-facing walls

Which Fix Fits Your Round Rock House?

In Old Town and the older subdivisions, start with the ducts: seal, insulate and resize them before replacing equipment. When something breaks, our AC repair crew finds the fault and lays out repair and replacement options side by side. For heat, our heating repair and replacement team services heat pumps and gas furnaces, including furnace replacement for homes with gas.

Newer homes east of I-35 often need the opposite: a right-sized system and humidity control, not more capacity. If you’re replacing any system, you can build your own system online to compare options first. For a game room or garage conversion, a ductless mini-split is often the simplest answer, and as a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor we install and repair Mitsubishi ductless mini-splits.

Your Round Rock Year, Month by Month

  • March: change filters and rinse pollen off the outdoor coil as trees bloom along Brushy Creek.
  • May: book a cooling tune-up before the first 100-degree week, and clear plants back two feet from the condenser.
  • July: check that the condensate drain is flowing and the outdoor pad is still level on clay soil.
  • October: schedule a heating check and test the backup heat on heat pumps.
  • December to February: on the west side especially, switch to a finer filter your system can handle during cedar season and watch the daily Austin air quality index.
  • Any time: if the house feels dusty or clammy, ask about our indoor air quality services.

Rather not keep track of May and October yourself? Our Home Maintenance Plan puts those spring and fall visits on the calendar for you.

Did You Know? Round Rock Trivia

Round Rock Donuts began as the Lone Star Bakery on Main Street in 1926, and its glazed donuts get their famous yellow color from fresh eggs.

Two more: the 1878 shootout in which Texas Rangers caught train robber Sam Bass happened in downtown Round Rock, and it is reenacted each year at the Frontier Days celebration in Old Settlers Park. And the Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express since 2000, is also where the UIL state baseball tournament is played.
