HVAC Service in West Lake Hills, TX

West Lake Hills was the idea of land planner Emmett Shelton, and it incorporated in 1953 on steep, cedar-covered hills just west of Austin. The bridge that links the city to Austin still carries Shelton’s name. Most of the building came in the 1970s and 1980s, when the south side of the Colorado River filled in with custom homes on large lots and winding roads.

It is a small place, about 3.6 square miles and roughly 3,400 people, and, like neighboring Rollingwood, it is served by Eanes ISD. Westlake High School, which opened in 1970, draws students from here and from neighboring Rollingwood. Locals simply call the whole area Westlake, and on a clear evening the view from the ridges runs all the way to downtown.

Very few houses in West Lake Hills are alike. Many are large, built into hillsides with walkout lower levels, tall glass facing the view and two or three separate systems. That design creates its own comfort problems. West-facing windows soak up afternoon sun while the downhill side of the house stays shaded. Lower floors that sit partly below grade feel cool but can turn clammy. Long duct runs lose air before they reach the far rooms.

A lot of the 1970s and 1980s homes have been remodeled or expanded since, sometimes more than once. When new rooms were tied into old ductwork without resizing, those rooms tend to lag behind the rest of the house.
