Driftwood is a Hill Country crossroads in northern Hays County, about 24 miles southwest of downtown Austin along RM 150. Settlers arrived around 1850, and by 1890 the community had a post office, a school, churches, a cotton gin and a general store. It nearly emptied out more than once, and the 2020 census counted just 106 people in the Driftwood CDP. The name still travels far, thanks to The Salt Lick and vineyards like Driftwood Estate Winery.
