Austin summers push every AC to its limit. Austin’s 165-foot moonlight towers date to the 1890s and are the only known surviving moonlight towers in the world. One of them forms the center pole of the Zilker Holiday Tree.

Better still, they were bought secondhand: in 1894 the city purchased 31 surplus towers from Detroit. And the Texas State Capitol, finished in 1888, stands taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington. Older still is the Treaty Oak on Baylor Street, a Texas live oak that foresters estimate is about 500 years old.
