Austin’s 165-foot moonlight towers date to the 1890s and are the only known surviving moonlight towers in the world. One of them forms the center pole of the Zilker Holiday Tree.

They were also bought secondhand: in 1894 the city purchased 31 surplus towers from Detroit. The Texas State Capitol, finished in 1888, stands taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, and the Treaty Oak on Baylor Street, a Texas live oak, is older than both: foresters estimate it at about 500 years.
