Dual Fuel Heat Pump Systems

A dual fuel system, also called a hybrid heat pump, pairs an electric heat pump outside with a gas furnace inside. In summer the heat pump cools like any air conditioner. In winter it heats the house on mild and cool days, and when the temperature drops far enough it hands off to the furnace. One thermostat decides which one runs.

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, so on most Central Texas winter days it warms the house on less energy than burning gas or running electric heat strips. The catch: as the outdoor air gets colder, its capacity falls just as the house starts losing heat faster. Somewhere on that curve, the gas furnace becomes the better tool.

That handoff temperature is the switchover, or balance point. We set it in the thermostat or control at installation, based on your equipment, your house and your gas and electric rates. The furnace can also cover defrost cycles, when the heat pump briefly reverses to melt frost off the outdoor coil, so the vents don’t blow cool air.

Dual fuel usually earns its place when:

• Your home already has a natural gas line to the furnace
• Your AC and furnace are both getting older
• You want hot air from the vents on the coldest nights
• You’d rather not lean on electric heat strips in a freeze
• You want heat pump efficiency without giving up gas
