Replacing a Furnace in Austin: What to Know First

Most gas furnaces in Austin sit in the attic or a hall closet, with the air conditioner’s indoor coil mounted right on top. That means a furnace replacement is rarely just about heat: the furnace blower also moves the air for your AC all summer long. When we replace a furnace, we look at the whole system so the new equipment, the coil and the ductwork work together.

A furnace that still lights is not always a furnace worth keeping. Replacement is usually worth a conversation when you see:

  • A cracked heat exchanger or other safety finding from a technician
  • Repeated repairs to igniters, flame sensors, control boards or the inducer motor
  • A blower that struggles to move air in summer as well as winter
  • Rooms that never get warm, or short cycling on cold mornings

  • An older AC and furnace that are both nearing the end of their life

Gas Furnace, Heat Pump or Dual Fuel: Which Fits Your Home?

If your home already has natural gas, you have three main paths when the furnace needs replacing:

  • A new gas furnace paired with an air conditioner. Strong, hot heat on the coldest nights and a familiar setup. Best when gas is already in place and you want to keep it.
  • An all-electric heat pump with backup heat strips. One outdoor unit heats and cools, and you can remove gas from the HVAC system. See Heat Pumps vs. Electric Resistance Heat.
  • A dual fuel system: a heat pump for most of the year and a gas furnace for the coldest days, controlled by one thermostat.

Austin has a long cooling season and a short heating season, with the occasional hard freeze. That mix is why many homeowners look closely at heat pumps and dual fuel when a furnace fails. How We Size and Install a New Furnace

A furnace that is too big short cycles and leaves some rooms cold. One that is too small runs nonstop on a freezing night. We size new equipment with an ACCA Manual J load calculation instead of copying the old nameplate. Here is what a furnace replacement with us includes:

  • Manual J load calculation and a check of your ductwork and returns
  • Matching the furnace blower to your AC or heat pump coil
  • Gas line, venting and combustion air checked against code
  • Condensate drain and PVC venting for high-efficiency condensing furnaces
  • Permits and inspections where required
  • Start-up testing, including combustion and carbon monoxide checks at the equipment
  • Thermostat setup and a walkthrough of your new system

80% or 95% AFUE: Which Furnace Efficiency Makes Sense in Austin?

AFUE tells you how much of the gas a furnace turns into heat for your home. Standard furnaces are rated around 80% AFUE. Condensing furnaces are rated 90% and above and pull extra heat out of the exhaust.

In colder climates, the higher efficiency usually pays for itself. In Austin, with only a few months of real heating, the answer depends on your home. Condensing furnaces need PVC venting and a condensate drain, which can add work in an attic installation. We will show you the trade-off between the purchase price and what you spend on gas instead of just pushing the top model.

If you are replacing the air conditioner at the same time, the outdoor unit and coil carry their own efficiency ratings (SEER2, and HSPF2 for heat pumps), and new systems now use newer refrigerants as R-410A is phased down. See What Do SEER and SEER2 Mean?.

What Does a New Furnace Cost in Austin?

The main things that drive the cost of a furnace replacement are:

  • Furnace size, based on your home’s load calculation
  • Efficiency (80% or condensing 90%+ AFUE) and single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed blowers
  • Whether the AC or heat pump and the indoor coil are replaced at the same time
  • Venting, gas line and condensate work
  • Attic or closet location and access
  • Duct repairs or modifications
  • Permits and inspections

Frequently Asked Questions

Many gas furnaces in Central Texas last 15 to 20 years or more, because our heating season is short. Age alone is rarely the deciding factor. Condition, repair history, safety findings and the age of the AC paired with it usually matter more.
