These names do not have their own page yet, but we see them in Central Texas homes all the time. Here is what to know about each when it needs service or replacement.

  • Goodman. If you searched “goodman ac unit,” here is the short version: Goodman is a Daikin brand, built near Houston, sold through a broad distributor network, which keeps common parts easy to find. Installation quality varies a lot because so many companies install it. Goodman and Amana explained.
  • Amana. Goodman’s premium sibling. Same parent and campus, different styling and warranty terms. Is Amana the same as Goodman?
  • Bryant. Carrier-owned since 1955, sold through its own dealers. Parts often cross-reference with Carrier. Bryant vs Carrier.
  • Payne. Carrier’s simpler, value-focused line. Carrier family.
  • Heil. ICP’s flagship name, with roots in the old Heil-Quaker business that Whirlpool once owned. ICP history.
  • Tempstar. Heil’s twin on the ICP platform. “Tempstar vs Heil” is mostly a question of dealer and badge. ICP brands.
  • Comfortmaker, Arcoaire and Day & Night. Additional ICP badges on the same platform. ICP brands.
  • Ruud. Rheem’s sister brand since 1959, built in Fort Smith, Arkansas with the same internal components. Ruud vs Rheem.
  • WeatherKing. Rheem’s budget brand. Rheem family.
  • York. Now part of Bosch, which licenses the York name for home and light commercial equipment. What changed for York.
  • Coleman and Luxaire. York’s sister brands, also now Bosch. York, Coleman and Luxaire.
  • Ducane and Armstrong Air. Lennox-owned Allied Air brands, sold through wholesale distributors rather than Lennox’s direct dealer network. Lennox family.
  • Frigidaire and Maytag. Central heating and cooling built by Nortek Global HVAC under licensed names, now part of Rheem. Nortek explained.
  • Ameristar. Trane Technologies’ value brand. Trane family.
  • Samsung. Ductless systems sold through a Samsung and Lennox joint venture headquartered in Texas. Lennox and Samsung.
  • Tosot. Built by Gree. Gree family.

Brand vs installation: what matters most

In Central Texas, systems run hard for months, attic air handlers bake all summer, and freezes like Winter Storm Uri (7°F at Camp Mabry in February 2021) test every heat pump. Across all these families, the things that decide how your system performs are the same:

  • Correct sizing for your home, so it removes humidity instead of short cycling.
  • Ductwork that is sealed and sized to move the right amount of air.
  • The right tier: single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed.
  • Clean drains, a working float switch and regular maintenance.
