Lennox

Dave Lennox ran a machine repair business for railroads in Marshalltown, Iowa, when he founded Lennox in 1895. Lennox International is now headquartered in Richardson, Texas, just outside Dallas, and owns the four businesses below. Only one of them sells the Lennox name.

• Direct-to-dealer model. Most brands travel factory to distributor to contractor. Lennox sells the Lennox brand straight to its dealers, which gives it tight control over who installs it. It also means Lennox parts come mainly from Lennox’s own stores, not the general supply houses that stock most other brands.
• Two families under one roof. Ducane, Armstrong Air, AirEase and Concord (the Allied Air brands) share Lennox’s parent but go through open distribution, with their own designs and warranty programs. They are not relabeled Lennox units.
• Ductless through Samsung. Rather than build its own mini-splits, Lennox partnered with Samsung. The joint venture began operating in the second half of 2024 and is headquartered in Roanoke, Texas.
• Refrigerant. In 2024 Lennox announced it was moving its residential HVAC products to R-454B.

A company that started out fixing railroad machinery in 1890s Iowa now has its headquarters in Richardson, and its Samsung ductless venture is based in Roanoke. Both sit in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, so the people deciding what goes into the Lennox or Samsung unit in your Austin yard work in Texas, not Iowa.

• Heat. Lennox’s top variable-capacity systems trim their output closely to the load, which suits a long Austin summer. Entry models are single-stage and simpler to repair.
• Humidity. Whatever the tier, sizing and airflow set-up decide whether the house feels crisp or clammy. An oversized Lennox short-cycles and shuts off before it pulls the moisture out.
• Attics. A Lennox furnace or air handler in a hot Austin attic needs its drain line cleared and its float switch tested every season.

• Parts timing. Lennox parts flow through Lennox’s own stores, so ask any service company how it gets them in midsummer, when every AC in town is working hardest.

A common pair of quotes: one for a Lennox, one for a Ducane or Armstrong Air, and the homeowner assumes it is the same box at two prices. Same parent company, yes, but separate product lines with different designs, dealer programs and warranties. To compare them fairly:

• Match the tier. Put single-stage against single-stage and variable-speed against variable-speed.
• Ask about parts. Allied Air brands flow through wholesale distributors; Lennox parts come mainly through Lennox stores. Ask how fast your service company can get parts for each in summer.
• Check the controls. Top-tier communicating systems, Lennox’s included, are built around the maker’s own thermostat. A third-party thermostat can limit features.
• Read the warranty. Terms and registration windows differ by brand and model.

Who makes Ducane air conditioners?
Allied Air Enterprises, a Lennox International business. Ducane’s sister brands there are Armstrong Air, AirEase, Concord, Allied and MagicPak.

Is Armstrong Air the same as Lennox?
Same parent company, different business. Armstrong Air goes through wholesale distributors with its own designs and warranties; Lennox sells directly to Lennox dealers.

Does Lennox make mini-splits?
Not in its own factories. Lennox sells ductless systems through Samsung Lennox HVAC North America, a joint venture that distributes Samsung products and “Lennox powered by Samsung” models.
