Daikin

Daikin, Goodman and Amana are one family, built on one campus in Waller, Texas. Here is how the three brands differ and what that means for your home.

Who makes Goodman? The Daikin family tree

Daikin does. Daikin Industries, founded in Osaka, Japan, in 1924 and now one of the largest air conditioning companies in the world, bought Goodman Global in 2012. In 2022 it renamed its North American business Daikin Comfort Technologies and put its three main home brands under one roof.

Goodman and Amana: who are Daikin's other brands?

Goodman is one of the most common names on outdoor units in Austin side yards, and it is Texan by birth. Harold Goodman spent years as a Houston air conditioning contractor before starting Goodman Manufacturing in 1975. The company made flexible duct and registers before it built whole systems, and in 1982 it bought the Janitrol brand and moved production to Houston.

Amana started as an appliance name. Goodman bought Amana’s parent in 1997, sold the appliance side to Maytag in 2001 and kept the heating and cooling line. That is why the Amana name on your AC is used under license, while Amana refrigerators come from a different company.

  • Is Amana the same as Goodman? Same parent, same Texas campus, a lot of shared engineering and parts. Amana is marketed as the premium badge, with different styling and its own warranty terms.
  • Is Goodman the same as Daikin? Goodman is owned by Daikin and built alongside Daikin-branded equipment, but Daikin-branded models lean more heavily on Daikin’s own inverter technology and controls.
  • Distribution. Goodman sells through a wide network of distributors, so parts are easy to find. The flip side: with so many installers carrying it, installation quality swings widely from one to the next.

What sets Daikin apart?

  • Inverter heritage. Daikin helped pioneer inverter room air conditioners and variable refrigerant (VRV) systems. An inverter compressor speeds up and slows down, like a gas pedal, instead of just switching on and off.
  • R-32 refrigerant. While most U.S. brands chose R-454B for the new low-GWP rules, Daikin, Goodman and Amana went with R-32. Both are mildly flammable “A2L” refrigerants and both require updated tools and training.
  • One factory campus. The Daikin Texas Technology Park in Waller, about 43 miles northwest of Houston, designs and builds Daikin, Goodman and Amana products. Daikin says it is the largest HVAC manufacturing facility in North America, at 4.2 million square feet.

Fun fact: the Astros play at Daikin Park

Since 2025, the Houston Astros have played at Daikin Park, under a naming rights deal with Daikin Comfort Technologies. A Japanese company that started out building aircraft radiators in 1924 now has its name on a Texas ballpark, with its biggest North American factory just up the road in Waller.

How do Daikin, Goodman and Amana handle Central Texas?

  • Heat. An inverter Daikin, or an upper-tier Goodman or Amana, slows down on a mild day and ramps up on a 105°F afternoon. Across our long summers that usually means steadier rooms and lower bills.
  • Humidity. An oversized single-stage Goodman is a classic cause of the cold, clammy house: it cools the air fast and shuts off before it pulls the moisture out. Correct sizing, or a variable-speed system, fixes that.
  • Attics. Many Goodman air handlers and furnaces sit in hot attics. Keep the drain line clear and the float switch working, and the water the coil pulls from the air goes outside instead of through the ceiling.
  • Freezes. Winter Storm Uri drove Camp Mabry to 7°F in February 2021. A Daikin, Goodman or Amana heat pump needs working backup heat for that kind of cold. See our freeze guide and dual fuel heat pumps.
