Rheem

Rheem, Ruud and WeatherKing share one parent, and since 2024 and 2025 so do Frigidaire, Maytag and Fujitsu General. Here is who makes what, and what it means for your quote.

Gray outdoor HVAC units with circular fan grilles recede in a row beside a modern building, with broad pipes running along the wall.

Who makes Rheem and Ruud?

Rheem Manufacturing has belonged to Paloma, a company from Nagoya, Japan, since 1988. Its parent, Paloma Rheem Holdings, bought Nortek Global HVAC in 2024 and Fujitsu General in 2025, so the family below looks very different from the one your older Rheem was born into.

Ruud vs Rheem: what is actually different?

Very little inside the cabinet. Rheem bought the Ruud Manufacturing Company in 1959 and has sold equipment under both names ever since. Comparable Rheem and Ruud units share engineering and internal components and are built at Rheem’s air conditioning plant in Fort Smith, Arkansas, open since 1970. What does differ:

  • Dealer programs. Rheem and Ruud keep separate dealer networks, so the badge on a new unit usually tells you which program the installer joined, not which brand is better.
  • Styling and model names. The cabinets look different and the model series carry different names.
  • Warranty details. Terms and registration rules vary by brand and model, so lay the two certificates side by side.

WeatherKing is the budget sibling, with a simpler lineup. Newer Rheem residential equipment runs R-454B refrigerant to meet the 2025 low-GWP rules.

What sets Rheem apart?

  • Air and water. Rheem is one of the few makers big in both heating and cooling and water heaters, so the name on your AC may match the one on your water heater. The wider family adds Raypak pool heaters and Friedrich room air conditioners.
  • Tiered lineup. Single-stage, two-stage and variable-speed air conditioners and heat pumps, plus gas furnaces and air handlers to pair with them.
  • Shared parts. Comparable Rheem and Ruud models use the same internal components, so one parts supply covers both badges.

Rheem started out galvanizing steel

In 1925 brothers Richard and Donald Rheem, with money from their brother William, opened a steel galvanizing business in Emeryville, California. A century later, the companies that grew from it own Rheem, Ruud, the Frigidaire and Maytag HVAC lines from Nortek, and Japan’s Fujitsu General air conditioning business. Not bad for a shop that coated steel.

How do Rheem and Ruud systems handle Central Texas?

  • Heat. Variable-speed Rheem and Ruud systems run long and quiet through a hot afternoon; single-stage units are simpler to fix but switch on and off harder.
  • Humidity. An oversized Rheem short-cycles, shutting off before it pulls the moisture out, and so does an oversized Ruud. Our humidity resources explain sizing.
  • Attics. Most Austin air handlers sit in the attic, where a clogged drain or a dead float switch ends as a stained ceiling. Have both checked every season.
  • Freezes. Camp Mabry fell to 7°F in Winter Storm Uri. A Rheem heat pump, like any heat pump, needs backup heat or a dual fuel set-up for a night like that. See dual fuel heat pumps.

How to compare a Rheem quote with a Ruud quote

Because the two brands share so much, a Rheem quote and a Ruud quote are easier to compare than most. Line up these five things:

  • Stage type. Is the outdoor unit single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed? That changes comfort and humidity control more than the badge does.
  • Matched system. Ask for the rating of the outdoor unit matched with the exact coil and air handler or furnace on the quote, not the condenser’s best-case number.
  • Refrigerant. New Rheem and Ruud equipment runs R-454B. If only one half of an older R-410A system is being replaced, ask how the installer will handle compatibility.
  • Registration. Warranty terms often depend on registering the equipment within a set window. Find out who is doing it.
  • Ductwork. A new Rheem on leaky, undersized ducts will underperform. Ask whether anyone inspected them.

One twist: if the house also has an older Frigidaire or Maytag system from Nortek, that unit now shares a corporate parent with your Rheem.

Does Gold Eagle work on Rheem and Ruud?

Yes. Gold Eagle installs, services and repairs Rheem, Ruud and WeatherKing systems in homes around Austin. If one quits, start with AC repair or heating, or schedule a visit online. To weigh a replacement, Build Your Own System lays out the options, and our Home Maintenance Plan keeps the new one tuned.

Rheem’s newer relatives: Nortek (Frigidaire, Maytag) and Fujitsu General. Rival families: Carrier and Trane.
