Gree

Gree says it builds about one in three air conditioners made worldwide. Here is who Gree is, how Tosot fits in, and what to expect from Gree inverter equipment in Texas.

Who makes Gree? The Gree family tree

Gree Electric Appliances Inc. of Zhuhai, in southern China, makes Gree equipment. The company started in 1989, took the Gree name in 1994 and has traded on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange since 1996. It is widely described as the world’s largest air conditioner maker.

Fun fact: roughly 1 in 3 air conditioners comes off a Gree line

That is Gree’s own figure: about one in three air conditioning systems produced worldwide. Gree UK has cited nine manufacturing plants turning out roughly 60 million residential air conditioners a year, backed by more than 8,000 research and development engineers, and Gree cites Euromonitor data putting it first in household air conditioners for many years running.

So even if you have never seen a Gree logo, a part inside some air conditioner you own may well have come off a Gree line.

What sets Gree apart?

  • It builds the parts, not just the boxes. Gree makes key air conditioning components and supplies them to other manufacturers.
  • Inverter from end to end. Gree’s U.S. lineup runs from single-room variable-speed mini-splits to the Flexx ducted heat pump, which connects to the ductwork you already have.
  • Bold cold-weather claims. Gree says Flexx heat pumps keep heating down to -22°F before backup heat strips are needed.
  • Registration sets the warranty. Gree offers a shorter base warranty out of the box and a longer one when the system is registered on time through Gree’s dealer registration process. Always register.
  • Two names, one maker. Tosot is built by Gree but has its own U.S. distribution and product lineup.

How does Gree equipment handle Austin heat, humidity and freezes?

  • Heat. An inverter compressor speeds up and slows down with the load instead of slamming on and off, which suits our long summers.
  • Humidity. Long, low-speed run times pull more moisture out of the air. In our climate, a Gree ductless head needs its coil and blower cleaned regularly. See humidity resources.
  • Parts. Gree is less common here than the biggest U.S. badges, and parts for less common brands can take longer to arrive. Regular maintenance catches worn parts before one has to be ordered in a hurry.
  • Freezes. Camp Mabry hit 7°F during Winter Storm Uri. Gree’s -22°F Flexx claim covers that on paper, but ask how the backup heat is set up anyway. See our freeze guide.

Is Tosot the same as Gree? The private-label question

Gree builds so much equipment, and so many parts for other companies, that homeowners often ask whether a Gree is “the same as” some other brand. A few ground rules:

  • Tosot is Gree. Owned and built by Gree, sold through a separate U.S. distributor with its own lineup.
  • A shared part is not a shared system. A brand that uses Gree-made parts still sets its own design, controls, testing and warranty. Two units are not identical just because one component came from the same factory.
  • Registration decides the warranty. Gree’s longer coverage depends on registering the system on time. Keep the paperwork.
  • Parts questions come first. Ask your installer where Gree parts come from and how long they usually take. That answer is worth having before a July breakdown.

Gree’s lineup runs from single-room mini-splits to multi-zone systems and the Flexx ducted heat pump, so it can cool one hot room or a whole house.

How Gold Eagle works with Gree

Gold Eagle’s technicians install, service and repair Gree and Tosot equipment around Austin, from single ductless heads to Flexx ducted systems. If a head has stopped cooling, start with AC repair; to cool a room the central system misses, see ductless mini-splits. Build Your Own System lays out whole-home options, our Home Maintenance Plan keeps up with the coil and blower cleaning, and you can schedule online to book a visit.

Other ductless and inverter makers worth comparing: Mitsubishi Electric, LG, Fujitsu and GE.
