Bosch

Bosch builds inverter heat pumps, and since 2025 it also owns the York and Coleman home HVAC business. Here is the new Bosch family tree and how its equipment handles Texas weather.

Who is Bosch in home HVAC? The Bosch family tree

Most people know Bosch for tools, car parts and dishwashers, but its Home Comfort Group has made heating and hot water equipment for a long time. In August 2025 Bosch closed the largest acquisition in its history: Johnson Controls’ residential and light commercial HVAC business, including the Johnson Controls-Hitachi joint venture.

What sets Bosch apart? The IDS heat pump family

Bosch’s signature home product is the Inverter Ducted Split (IDS) heat pump: a central system with the inverter-driven, variable-speed compressor you would find in a mini-split, hooked to your existing ductwork.

  • IDS Light is aimed at warmer climates (Bosch lists it at 15 SEER2).
  • IDS Plus and IDS Premium Connected step up in efficiency, with the Premium Connected rated up to 20 SEER2.
  • IDS Ultra is Bosch’s cold-climate model, and IDS Edge is a compact outdoor unit.

Since an IDS is a heat pump, it can replace both a central AC and an electric furnace, or pair with a gas furnace as dual fuel. Learn more about heat pumps.

Fun fact: the dishwasher company now owns York and Coleman

The Johnson Controls deal nearly doubled Bosch Home Comfort, to more than 25,000 people and 16 more factories worldwide. A company Texans know mostly for dishwashers and power drills now stands behind some of the most common condensers in Austin backyards: York and Coleman.

How does Bosch equipment handle Austin heat, humidity and freezes?

  • Long cooling season. An IDS compressor slows down on mild days and ramps up on hot ones. Over our long cooling season, that usually means steadier temperatures than a single-stage system gives.
  • Humidity. Long, low-speed run times pull moisture out, but only if the setup is right: fan speeds and dehumidification settings should be tuned for our climate. See humidity resources.
  • Attics. The IDS air handler typically sits in a hot attic, so its condensate drain and float switch need regular checks.
  • Freezes. At Uri’s 7°F low, a standard-climate heat pump needs backup heat. If winter heating is your priority, ask about IDS Ultra or dual fuel. Read our freeze guide.

Is a Bosch IDS right for your home?

An inverter ducted heat pump suits many Central Texas homes. Four questions decide whether it suits yours:

  • Do you have gas heat now? An IDS can take over cooling and most winter heating, with the gas furnace kept as backup for freezes.
  • Are the ducts sealed? Inverter systems run long and slow, and leaky attic ducts waste much of that efficiency.
  • Which tier? IDS Light keeps things simple for warm climates; IDS Plus and Premium Connected add efficiency and connectivity; IDS Ultra adds winter capacity.
  • What about York and Coleman? Bosch owns those brands now too, so for a while you may see Bosch, York and Coleman quotes side by side from the same parent. Compare stage type, efficiency and warranty, not the name.

If a quote mixes components, ask for the matched rating of the exact outdoor and indoor pair.

How Gold Eagle works with Bosch

Gold Eagle works on Bosch IDS heat pumps and on the York and Coleman systems now under the Bosch roof, installing, servicing and repairing all three. If yours has stopped cooling or heating, see AC repair and heating. To weigh an IDS against other replacements, use Build Your Own System; to keep it tuned, see our Home Maintenance Plan; to book a visit, schedule online.

Questions homeowners ask about Bosch

Does Bosch own York?
Bosch bought Johnson Controls’ residential and light commercial HVAC business in 2025 and uses the York name for those products under a long-term license. Johnson Controls still owns the York trademark and its commercial chiller business.

What is a Bosch IDS heat pump?
An Inverter Ducted Split heat pump: a central, ducted system with a variable-speed inverter compressor, offered in several efficiency tiers including a cold-climate model.

Is Bosch good for hot climates?
Bosch built IDS Light for warmer climates. In Central Texas, as with any brand, correct sizing and a careful install matter most.

Does Bosch make Coleman?
Since August 2025, Coleman belongs to Bosch as part of the business it bought from Johnson Controls.
