The Honeywell Home thermostat on your wall is made by Resideo, not Honeywell. Here is how the Honeywell name split three ways, and what that means when you pick a thermostat or zoning for an Austin house.

Who makes Honeywell thermostats?

Resideo Technologies does. In October 2018 Honeywell spun off its home comfort and security business as Resideo, a separate public company, which uses the Honeywell Home name under a long-term trademark license.

What can Honeywell Home controls do?

Works with almost any brand. Honeywell Home controls and air quality products aren’t tied to one equipment maker, so they fit a Trane, a Carrier, a Goodman and nearly everything else.
Zoning. A zone panel and motorized dampers in the ducts let one system cool upstairs and downstairs separately.
Whole-home air quality. Whole-home dehumidifiers, ventilation controls and media air cleaners mount on the system you already have.

The round thermostat that never hangs crooked

Industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss shaped Honeywell’s “Round” thermostat from a concept by Honeywell engineer Carl Kronmiller, and it debuted in 1953. Dreyfuss had noticed that rectangular thermostats often hung crooked. A round one can’t look crooked. Examples of the Round now sit in Smithsonian collections.

What do Honeywell Home controls fix in an Austin house?

Two-story homes. Upstairs rooms in Austin often run several degrees warmer than downstairs all summer. Zoning, or a thermostat with a remote sensor upstairs, can even that out.
Humidity. A thermostat that manages dehumidification, alone or paired with a whole-home dehumidifier, keeps indoor humidity in check through muggy months. See humidity resources.
Heat pump settings. In a freeze like Uri, when Camp Mabry fell to 7°F, the thermostat decides when backup heat kicks in, so a wrong setting shows up on the coldest night. See our freeze guide.
Compatibility. Variable-speed systems often use the equipment maker’s own communicating thermostat. If yours does, a Honeywell Home model can cost you features, and we’ll say so before swapping it in.

How to pick a Honeywell Home thermostat or zoning control

Match the equipment. A single-stage system needs a simple thermostat. A two-stage system or heat pump with backup heat needs a thermostat that supports those stages. Fully communicating variable-speed systems usually need the manufacturer’s own control.
Check the wiring. Many smart thermostats need a common (C) wire for power, and older homes may not have one at the thermostat.
Consider sensors. Remote room sensors let the thermostat average rooms or favor one, a simpler fix than full zoning for some homes.
Zoning takes ductwork. A zone panel needs motorized dampers in the ducts and enough airflow capacity, or static pressure builds in the ducts when only one zone calls.
Plan for humidity. If the house stays damp, pair the thermostat with a whole-home dehumidifier.
