What does an HVAC technician do?
An HVAC technician is a community helper who keeps the machines that heat and cool our homes working. They check, clean, fix and install air conditioners and heaters, and they explain what they found.

You know about firefighters, mail carriers and librarians. Here’s another community helper you might not know as well: the HVAC technician.
HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. Ventilation means moving air in and out and around a building. A technician (say it: tek-NISH-un) is a person trained to work on machines. People often just say “tech.”
The five big jobs
Check
Techs look, listen and measure to see if a system is working the way it should.
Clean
Dust and dirt make machines work harder. Techs clean the parts that need it.
Fix
When something breaks, techs figure out which part is the problem and replace it.
Install
“Install” means put in. Techs set up brand new systems when old ones wear out.
Explain
Techs tell the grown-ups what they found, in words that make sense.
A day in the life: summer
Summer is the busiest time of year for techs in Austin. Here’s what a summer day might look like.
- Early morning: The tech checks the work truck. It’s like a rolling toolbox, full of tools and spare parts.
- First visit: A family’s air conditioner is running, but the house isn’t getting cool. The tech puts covers on their shoes to keep the floors clean, then listens to what the family noticed.
- Detective time: The tech checks the thermostat (the control on the wall), the air filter, the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. They use gauges and thermometers to measure what’s happening inside the system.
- The fix: They find a worn-out part, replace it, and test the system again to make sure cool air is coming out.
- Explain: The tech shows the grown-ups what was wrong and what they did.
- Afternoon: A tune-up, which is a checkup for a system that isn’t broken. The tech cleans parts, clears the little pipe that carries away water the AC pulls out of the air, and checks that everything is working right.
- End of day: The tech writes notes about every visit, restocks the truck and heads home. It was a hot day!
A day in the life: winter
In winter, techs switch to heating. They check furnaces (heaters that warm air inside the house) and heat pumps (machines that can pull heat from outside air, even when it’s chilly, and bring it indoors). When a cold snap comes, a tech’s phone gets busy again. Between rush times, techs install new systems and keep learning about new equipment.
What’s in the toolbox?
Techs carry lots of tools. Here are some of the important ones.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| 🌡️ Thermometer | Measures how warm or cool the air is. Techs check the air going into the system and the air coming out. |
| ⏲️ Gauges | Measure the pressure of the refrigerant, the special fluid that carries heat out of the house. Pressure tells the tech a lot about how the system is doing. |
| ⚡ Meter | Measures electricity. Techs use it to find out if parts are getting the power they need. |
| 🔦 Flashlight | Lots of HVAC equipment sits in dark closets and attics. |
| 🪛 Screwdrivers and nut drivers | Open up panels to get to the parts inside. |
| 🪮 Fin comb | Gently straightens the thin metal fins on the outdoor unit when they get bent. |
| 🌀 Vacuum pump | Pulls air and moisture out of the refrigerant pipes before a new system is filled. It’s not for cleaning floors! |
| 👟 Shoe covers | Stretchy covers that keep a family’s floors clean. |

Could YOU be a tech someday?
Lots of techs say they liked taking things apart to see how they work when they were kids. Techs are good at:
- Solving puzzles. Every broken system is a mystery to figure out.
- Math and science. Techs measure, compare numbers and understand how heat moves.
- Working with their hands. They fix real things.
- Being kind and clear. They go into people’s homes and explain things calmly.
- Safety. They follow careful rules every single day.
How people become techs in Texas
- Do great in school. Math, science and reading all help. Some high schools have career classes about building trades.
- Learn the trade. Some people go to a trade school or a community college. Others join an apprenticeship, where you learn on the job from experienced techs while you take classes.
- Get certified to handle refrigerant. Refrigerant has to be handled carefully so it doesn’t escape into the air. Techs pass a test to show they know the rules.
- Register with the state. In Texas, technicians register with the state and work under a licensed company.
- Keep growing. After years of experience and a big test, a tech can earn a contractor license. Techs keep learning their whole careers.
